There were lots of reasons for people to come here.  Religious persecution
was one of the biggest.  There were criminals amongst the early settlers,
but they were a small percentage.

That's a defeatist attitude and I'll have no part of it.

Nor do I.  You're still missing the point...

Their work ethic may be fine, but their ethics in general are extremely
suspect.  That's the point.

The majority are... but the minority who aren't is getting larger.  It's
always the few bad apples who spoil it for the rest... and the few are
getting less few, and the spoilage is becoming pervasive.
