Check out LVS, and or the Mission Critical Linux Kimberlite stuff.
Both are Open Source/GPL'ed and will allow you to:

                load balance between systems
                have fail-over capability
                reduce downtime
                etc.

LVS (pirahna, ultra monkey) is a little more rough around the edges, and
Kimberlite is a little more geared towards the enterprise as far as the
robustness, etc. I don't know how complicated our stuff is to set up though,
since I haven't been directly involved with the product.

If you're interested, I can get someone to come to your company and provide a
full demo showing you our technology, how it works, etc.

Since it's GPL'ed, there's obviously no obligation here, but if management is
concerned, <shameless plug> we offer a wide variety of technical
support options for the Kimberlite offering </shamelss plug> :)
