Hi Greg -

   My guess for the sound system is that your network card is eating
up the IRQ that belongs to sound.  You may need to go into
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts and add "exclude" statements to prevent the
NIC from gobbling up the BIOS-configured sound IRQs.  My VAIO had a
similar conflict between the NIC and the modem.
