Yesterday, Benjamin Scott gleaned this insight:
> Not particularly. I'd just pick up a 6.2 CD. You can get them for a few
> bucks. That's just the CD, no printed manuals, no technical support, but the
> story is the same with the CD in the back of that book.
Note that the key there is that there are no *PRINTED* manuals... if you
download the ISO image (CDROM image) from redhat's ftp site, it includes
HTML and PostScript versions of ALL of RedHat's printed manuals, right on
the CD. It also includes electronic versions of the System
Administrator's Guide, Network Administrator's Guide, and lots and lots of
other documentation. All for free.
The same goes for if you buy the CD at a store or from a discount CD
distributor (such as www.cheapbytes.com) on-line (or offline for that
matter).
Of course you can also get the "Official" boxed Redhat distribution with
printed manuals in stores etc., but you will pay significantly more for
them. Better to buy a book like _Running_Linux_ and go get the RedHat 6.2
disk off the web or from cheapbytes. :)
On the other hand, if no one buys Official RedHat from RedHat, they will
eventually go out of business, and many of the people they employ will be
forced to go off and do real work, thereby losing much of the time they
have to develop open-source software, and hence the OSS community will
suffer.
