  This used to be the case, but is no longer true.  AGP GART support appeared
around kernel 2.2.12, IIRC, and the i810 chipset was added in XFree 3.3.6.

  This is still a good recommendation.  The i810 chipset's graphics engine
isn't exactly a high performance product, and the shared memory design is a
burden for any power user.

  It can use up to 4 MB, IIRC, but you may have to reserve it at boot by using
the "mem=" directive to tell the kernel to use less memory then is present in
the system.  As you say, a pain.
