  I don't think so.  If you had the same problem, X11 wouldn't start at all.

  It sounds simply like the mode setting(s) in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file
are non-optimal for your display.  Flat-panel displays have only one "native"
resolution; everything else has to be converted to it using various DSP
tricks.  Those tricks will impact display performance, often severely.

  First, hunt around on Dell's website for information on that model.  Dell
claims they are supporting Linux now, and while they often miss the wharf, let
alone the boat, sometimes they come through.  You're looking for an XF86Config
file, or at least some "mode lines", for that laptop.

  Failing that, try finding out the specs for the display's native mode, and
pick the stock XF86Config mode line that most closely matches it.
