DLT has the advantage of being able to contain more data per tape than any
other out there right now. Additionally, the streaming media format is
superior (in general) to helical-scan media formats such as DDS or 8mm.
I believe AIT is Exabyte's entry into the large-capacity tape market.
Unfortunately, it's still helical-scan, it's still from Exabyte, and it's
only from Exabyte. They really blew it with the 8mm technology, and people
are not quick to trust them again.
Excrix is supposed to have a great product out. It's a bizarre format, kindof
a mix between streaming and helical-scan, but with packetization of data and
variable speed drives thrown in for good luck :)
They're really making waves in the mid-range market. People I know using them
love them. Unfortunately they're too new to have any long term market stats
out.
It was either Workstation/Server or Sysadmin magazing which had a great article
about backup media comparison about 2 months ago. The article was written by
Curtis W. Preston of Collective Technologies. There's basically no one who
knows more about backups than this guy. So much so, he wrote the O'Reilly
book on Backups!
(Incidently, he's giving a talk at the Museum of Science in Boston today about
this very topic. If he gleans any insight worth noting, I'll report back
tonight to you :)
