I don't think name tags should be strongly objectionable per se, but I've
got some qualms about practical issues, especially with the pre-meeting
supper-fests.

Some ideas to consider as possible suggestions (some might require
pre-arrangement with the hosting facility):

- sign directing folks to the right place (could be as simple as "gnhlug" and
an arrow, or "gnhlug upstairs" or whatever)

- optional name tags, maybe with an appropriate qualifier (i.e. "old fart" or
"Be gentle, it's my first time" :-)

- especially if newby name tags are provided and used, make an effort
to include unfamiliar faces in the conversation, and to make them feel
welcomed (not just to overwhelm them with technical jargon - at times
this crew makes me feel technically ignorant, and I've been a professional
geek for over thirty years!)

That should be enough, KISS.
