If you plan on having cable Internet service for more than 15 months, buy the
Toshiba with the rebate. If you think you might switch to DSL or something
else, rent it.

I've heard about some folk with problems with the Toshibas here on the list.
I have a Lancity (looks like surplus 1950s military - big & clunky) which
works fine. I also have a Toshiba (which is what Mediaone - excuse me, AT&T -
is providing now). It also works fine. I can see no appreciable performance
difference. (I have two locations so I use both often.)
Having said that, when the last installer came by his van was full of the
Toshiba cable modems. In fact it was so full, they had jammed in the track of
his sliding door which he was pulling and banging to make it open. Half a
dozen fell out on the driveway. He just tossed them back in. I'd prefer not
to get one of those. Let alone the mashed one in the track. ;-)
