Since I have had cable modem service for over 4 years (or was it 5), I
have had virtualy no trouble with my cable modem. My original cable
modem was a Lan City with an AUI connector. My wife also got her own
cable modem for a while. At the time, she absolutely did not want to
share the connection with me. I did find that one time her connection was
very slow. A reboot of Windows did not fix it. A reboot of the cable
modem did. Over the period of time, I have had 2 service calls where
humans came to the house. The first time, the service guy found that the
cables themselves were not properly installed. He replaced the coax
connectors on all the coax cables from the pole and into the house. The
second service call, the guy found that when measuring the electrical
readings from both cable modems, that mine was a bit out of spec, so he
replaced it. I subsequently returned my wife's cable modem and ran her
system through IP Masq (then a Linksys Router).

I think the $10.00/Month rent on the cable modem is well worth it.
Eliminates much finger pointing if you have a problem.
