Bear in mind that RH 6.2 is getting old - 7.0 has been out for a couple
of months now. That said, since you said you _recently_ installed 6.2,
I would STRONGLY recommend that you immediately go back to the Red Hat
support sites and gobble up all of the updated packages ASAP. You may
or may not find something that looks like it could pertain to your
compilation problems, but you never know - sometimes the most innocuous
looking library could be the one tripping you up.

Note that there were/are a number of problems with compilation on 7.0,
arising out of the very controversial inclusion of an unreleased beta
test version of gcc as the default compiler. I won't attempt to
summarize beyond that (and respectfully ask the group NOT to re-open
the can of worms), but merely point you off to either this list's archives
or the Linux kernel list archive for the gory details.

Once you do get your compilation suite fixed up, there should, IMNSHO,
be any reason why you can't just grab any j-random package from Freshmeat
or SourceForge or anywhere else. BTW, one other thing that might be
pertinent - what architecture are you running on and what architecture
are you compiling for? I've seen occasional hiccups between "i386"
and "i686", for example. (Don't bother to ask about alpha, sparc or
any others :-( ).

Just my 20 millidollars' worth - your mileage will probably vary.
