Well, I've been running RH6.2 for a *loooooong* time now, and never had
problem such as you describe. However, I also installed just about everything
on the CD, so that could be your problem. I would recommend installing at
least the major development rpms, since those are the most likely cause of
your problem.
Now, as far as alternative distributions, I like RH in general. Once they
work out some of the problems of 7.0 and release 7.1 and subsequently 7.2, I
think it'll be a great OS and quite stable. I also really like Debian, though
they do need to work on their installer (which they are doing).
If you can get past the installation phase, I think you'll find that Debian is
an incredibly stable OS, and personally, I find their package management
scheme to be better than rpm (though I know rpm much better at this point).
