  Do a "cat /proc/filesystems" and make sure the kernel thinks it is in the
kernel.

  Check with Mandrakesoft for updates/errata/bugs/whatever.

  Failing that, I would try recompiling your own kernel from pristine sources.  
That's one of the first things I do when a vendor-supplied kernel goes wrong.  
Even without the goofy things every vendor does, you can't always choose
reasonable defaults for every combination of everything in the universe.
