Yeah! ALT tags are a beautiful thing...they at least keep a site usable no
matter who's looking around. It's amazing how many sites don't even go that
far (and it's really not "that far" to begin with...just a few extra words
to type in). Unfortunately, I've even met someone who refused to use ALT
tags because he thought THOSE were the reason his images wouldn't load
sometimes. Oh well, "Never attribute to malice..." right?

One other suggestion for you problem: Sometimes for "buttons" I use a
standard table with appropriate settings for borders. You can set the
background color of the cells to be something distinctive from the rest of
your page, and can even use more than one color to group these "buttons"
into categories. The use of table cells lets you center the text in all
"buttons" and they will all be the same size dynamically. You can even
break multi-word text in the buttons into multiple lines if taller buttons
are more attractive than long ones. Plus you get the full spectrum of HTML
formatting (fonts, <B>, <I>, etc.) I use table "buttons" in place of frame
menu bars when I want to keep a site's overall look the same even if someone
chooses not to view frames.

Not only that, but the server doesn't even get lonely :)

I would just like to point out that *nothing* I was trying to do
would have
prevented anyone from viewing the page on what ever their choice of
browser
was. All I wanted was several buttons of uniform length so the page
was
somewhat aesthetically pleasing. There were plenty of ALT tags, and
it's Lynx
        compliant.
