I'm not sure how this ties in to Brooks (which I have read, and thanks to you
it's back in the queue; damnit).  Yes, you could get an XML stream that says
"Freds exist and you deal with them by using THIS (tm, proprietary thingy) but
in a world where choice is the default, the THISs of the world would get ported 
pretty quickly.  

I don't mean to be a cheerleader for XML, I just think that there's hope there.
