I don't use IRC, AIM, Jabber, or any of that too much, but I can see one
good use for it (out of probably many, but this is one I have experience
with): education. I took an on-line course a while back, seminar type.
Once a week, the entire group (all across the US) got together on an
IM-type system, and would discuss the week's lesson. The real-time nature
of it made the discussion, I thought, better than the standard e-mail
discussion. And, as a bonus over a phone-type conversation, at the end of
the discussion, the hoster would post a transcript of the chat session -
instant class notes!
So, there are some uses, there are other things which are better with
e-mail, others that are better in person. Each tool to it's use.

Thought for today: FITNR // adj.
[Thinking Machines, Inc.] Fixed In The
Next Release. A written-only notation attached to bug reports.
Often wishful thinking.
