If your family and friends are far flung and mostly all online, it's a
great thing.  Unfortunately, different sects of my family/friends have
each discovered, and only use one different IM standard (can't we all just
get along?).  For the longest time this meant running AIM, Yahoo, MSN and
ICQ in the background at all times.  This was particularly bothersome back
when the only Linux clients were Java based.  Until I discovered the
plugins for GAIM, that is!  I can now run one client that speaks all of
these protocols.  Life is beautiful once again!

Now if I could just keep GAIM from running away with all my memory
periodically.   Grrrrr...
