Sometimes, when I'm in the middle of a problem, I turn off most of my
email. In fact, there are some mailing lists that I am on that I only
read in bulk, at the end of the day, when my brain is sluggish. I
value the contents of these mailing lists but I can't let their
content interrupt my work.
Sometimes, when I find that a particular thread in a mailing list that
I'm on has turned sufficiently uninteresting, I configure procmail to
just throw out the rest of that thread.
I have friends who I find to be interesting, but sometimes they get to
be a bit much. procmail to the rescue....

Being a vegetarian (mostly), I tend to avoid both.
