Yup, that seems more likely to me, as well.
For example, I recently discovered that one reason
Netscape was going completely catatonic on my
system at work was that it was blocked waiting to
open /dev/dsp in order to play some music at me
when /dev/dsp was already in use by another app.
When/if that app finished, Netscape would proceed as
if nothing was wrong, but it's apparently willing to
wait forever while giving no indication of why...
