Depending on what your sound hardware is and what version of the
kernel you're using, these could be known issues. Some versions of
the drivers for some recent sound hardware, specifically earlier
versions of the drivers for the emu10k1 (found in many of Creative
Labs PCI cards), the Intel sound stuff (AC97 blah blah), and the
ymfpci chip (most notably found in many newer laptops AFAIK) are all
scragged. I know this, because I've got one of each of these things
either in one of my own systems or one I use at work. =8^)

If you can't find a kernel version that fixes your problem (or don't
feel like hunting), try the ALSA project (www.alsa-project.org). It's
a bit of a PIA to get it working properly initially, but once you do,
"it just works" as they say.

However, AFAIK, all of the problems with the above mentioned sound
hardware are resolved in the latest 2.4 series kernel. Some were
resolved well before that, but I can't give you specific version
numbers. I'm still using ALSA on some of my systems though, because
those drivers often provide advanced features which the stock kernel
stuff doesn't, like built-in sequencer support (i.e. you can play MIDI
files)!

HTH.
