Sound is very out of my realm, but here goes...

I knew I was going to install Mandrake 8.1 this weekend anyway, so I was
waiting to see if that magically fixed my problem before changing kernels.
It didn't completely, but it did help. Sorta.

I was running Mandrake 8.0 (2.4.3 kernel) and as of Sautrday I have Mandrake
8.1 (2.4.8 kernel).

I have an onboard creative labs PCI deal that uses the esonique es1371 module.

Off the bat:

Changing the sound settings in the KDE control center did nothing for me in
8.0. I could switch from 8 bit, 16 bit, automatic and nothing would happen.
Same with the audio buffer rate. In 8.1 I was able to dramatically increase
the quality through those settings. In both 8.0 and 8.1, if I select
alsa, I get no sound, Open Sound System "works."

However, my sound in Windows still totally KICKS BUTT over this 8.1 crap. I
can get a much higher quality at higher volumes in Windows, something very
important to me.

8.1 still loops the last 1/2 second not a big deal to me, but it's there. I
really don't care.

Well, just now I rebooted 8.1 for the first time since I installed Saturday
(it's a dual boot machine and I needed the other OS) and ever since,
everytime I start X, the sound server stops due to "cpu overload." This
happens even when I adjust the audio buffer rate completely in favor of low
cpu usage. It also occurs with barely anything running and plenty of cpu
available. It reccurs when I restart the sound server.

I was trying to avoid reverting to the 2.2 kernel, but I don't really need
2.4 on this machine, and if Ben says 2.2 works, well... I can't live without
my stereo.

Thanks for bringing it up, Ben.

(and if anyone made it this far down cares to explain the practical
differences between ALSA and OSS, I'd love to know)
