Err, what other commands did I mention?  Oh, and it's not 
'datacompression', it's 'datcompression'!

Upon review of my previous e-mails, it seems I was consistently wrong 
in spelling it 'datacompression'.  Well, at least I was consistent.

I thought you might have, at your disposal, a Debian system you could 
get the source from.

I'll gladly send you the source stuff from Debian, but I think the 
problem is that I led you to believe the option was datacompression, 
and you didn't cross-check me with the man page :)

Try using:
        mt -f /dev/st0 datcompression

and let me know what that gets you :)
