Whoops. Going back and checking the system changelog, this is mt-st
version 0.6, which is *not* stock Red Hat 6.2. As if things were not
confusing enough already. My bad.

According to the changelog for mt-st 0.6, the 'datcompression' command was
removed in favor of the 'compression' command, which uses a new ioctl.

Okay, RHL 6.2's mt, which is mt-st 0.5b, does have a 'datcompression'
command, and it does appear to report status and let me turn things on and
off. I will have to see if it actually makes a difference.

Well, it isn't so much that my final goal is to turn it on, but rather,
just to be able to turn it at all! It might already be on, for all I know.

Sorry, that was confusing. In stock GNU mt 2.4.2. Neither a
'datcompression' nor a 'datacompression' command is present. The code to
make the 'status' display appear as it apparently does for you is not there.

All the goodies from mt-st, like 'setblk', 'setdensity', and so on, are
not there, either, but of course, you never mentioned those. :-)

Well, I've been trying both, in case that makes you feel any better. :)

  Nope. Sorry. :)

I would be very glad if you did! It appears to give much more useful
diagnostics than anything I have.
