Hosstraders is where old radio equipment goes to die. It is basically a flea market/swap meet for gear heads like us, with a very strong focus in amateur radio equipment. If it uses or abuses anything from a vacuum tube to a micro-chip, you'll find it at Hosstraders. You see everything from vendors selling new stuff, to the guy who builds custom amps for a living, to the guy who cleaned out his basement. There are also large numbers of hangers-on: Pure computer geek, because Ham and Homebrew share a lot; the guy who sells really bright LED flashlights; fair food vendors; survivalist suppliers. Even Radio Shack usually has a table. As far as "getting started in radio" goes, there is less of a focus on that, but I would say yes. The local radio clubs do usually have tables (I've seen 'em), and various organizations provide free or discounted exams for Ham. So you can use it for a jumping-off point. (I say all of this as one of the hangers-on I mentioned above; I'm there as a computer geek, and know next to nothing about Ham radio.) -- Ben Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization.
