  IO-APIC is forced on if SMP is on, so you got it anyway.  The option is
only meaningful if SMP is not enabled.

  That would be "GCC 2.96".  Try editing the kernel Makefile and changing
the declaration of "gcc" to "kgcc".  ("kgcc" is a Red Hat thing.  It stands
for "kernel GCC", but the kernel is not the only thing that has issues with
Red Hat's "GCC 2.96".)

  Unless you need one of Red Hat's patches, try a pristine kernel package.
By "pristine", I mean, "As released by Linus or his deputy".  If you have
the SRPM from Red Hat, you can extract the original source tarball from it.
Otherwise, head on over to <http://www.kernel.org> and grab a copy from
there.
