I second (third? fourth?) the pointers to the LDP, and the recommendation for _USAH_. _Essential System Administration_, by AEleen Frisch, published by O'Reilly, is also very good. Chances are, you are not the first to encounter that issue, and someone else has already made the solution available on the Internet.
