  You need to boot the Windows XP installation CD-ROM and choose the
"Recovery Console" option when prompted. Then issue the "FIXMBR" command
from the Recovery Console command prompt.

  Be aware that, per Microsoft's requirements, many vendors no longer ship a
bootable version of Windows XP. You only get a "restore image" option
(which your friend does *NOT* want to do -- it replaces the existing
contents of the hard drive, including all user data).

  The other option is to find a DOS-based system and make a boot disk using
that, copy FDISK to it, and boot that.

  The fact that your friend has already "killed" Mandrake makes things much
harder.  :-(

  Oh, and FYI: Windows loads on top of MS-DOS.

  Win95 = Windows 4.0
  Win98 = Windows 4.1
  WinME = Windows 4.2

  "Windows NT" does not. The first release of NT was 3.0.

  Windows 2000 = NT 5.0
  Windows XP = NT 5.1
  Windows.NET = NT 5.2 or 6.0 (we're not sure which yet)
