Yes that is a good idea, but for the sake of immediacy, he should just drag
his dad to SoftPro; there he can get a copy of Mandrake 8.1 or 8.2 for
$30.00. His dad will see the nice shiny printed box, the professionally
marked CDs, printed manual, and all the things that make a software package
look "legitimate" to the clueless. $30.00 is a small price to pay to not be
deceptive and live his whole linux computing life in the closet.
