I'm new to it too.
I've just been editing the xml files directly in gedit
or bluefish.
I'm used to HTML and XML, so I've picked up DocBook
basics quite quickly.
I'd say you can get by with mostly just the <sect> and
<para> tags. You can pick up things like <xref> by
looking at how it's done in the file.
