Seems there is now a convergence between the hacking being done for

Try installing evolution-data-server-devel. That should help get you
further.
Alternatively get the latest version of gnome-shell-build-setup.sh and
run it - that should take care of all build requisites.

Hope this helps you along.

I hope the incomplete build (still pending ... at GS) will not have
adverse effect as I do these things. I got evolution-data-server-devel
and dependencies ... I'm on it :)
Hello Onyeibo,
Using Ubuntu 10.10 I had the same problem, it was fixed installing the
packages bellow:
libedataserverui1.2-dev
libedataserver1.2-dev
evolution-data-server-dev
Later when I tried to start the GNOME Shell the problem was:
mutter: symbol lookup error:
/home/rodrigopadula/gnome-shell/install/lib/gtk-3.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so:
undefined symbol: gtk_quit_add
Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
It was fixed removing the file libcanberra-gtk-module.so
rm ~/gnome-shell/install/lib/gtk-3.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so
