They can't.  "open source" is just a marketing campaign for free software.

You could argue that the concept of "free software" existed before RMS or
GNU.  That seems to be what you are arguing.

There, you're welcome to your opinion.

I'd say that free software predates RMS, but the free software *movement* is
something he started.
