Well, for non-gurus not running Linux or .. (burp),
the instructions would look like this:

    download lilypond-x.x.x.tar.gz
    gzip -dc lilypond-x.x.x.tar.gz | tar xf -  
    cd lilypond-x.x.x.tar.gz
    ./configure
    make
    make install

for lilypond-x.x = lilypond-1.1, you need gcc-2.8 or egcs-1.1
and guile-1.3
