It creates no staffs itself for technical reasons. I know about it
(although it's not in the TODO).

ly2dvi generates a Latex file, that can be tweaked.  I'm sure it is
possible, but I can't give specifics (I never use ly2dvi)

Have you tried fiddling with slope damping?
