Yes, that's what I'm doing now.  Unfortunately, the dvips -> ps2pdf route
causes lyrics/text to be horrible bitmap fonts, but there are ways round
that...

Also, it means that I can't use some of the fancy latex packages available
for producing presentations or hyperlinked pdf files, but again, I can see
some ways around that, too.

Thanks -- you've set my mind at ease.  Pdftex doesn't work (easily) because
it doesn't work, not because I'm missing something simple.
