Topic originally meant facet, not subject. It was a useful rhetorical
term. You can't always trust dictionaries to give useful musical
definitions, either; for example, a "time value" is usually defined as
the duration of a note, which it usually is not. The translation of the
word "slur" is irrelevant. A bilingual dictionary simply gives two
languages in which to become confused instead of one. The curved line
with a grace note *or grace chords* cannot obey the same rules as a
slur or phrase mark, and it may be more a tie than a slur, so it is
not helpful to blur all such distinctions or wish them out of existence.
I wish that a curved line had never been used to mean multiple ties,
but it was one of very many bad 19th century ideas. Not mine. :-)
