That indeed suppresses the bars, however, it also tries to fit
everything on a single line. I get the message:
warning: No feasible line breaking found
And the output simply runs off the page.
The solution offered by Peter Chubb produces exactly the same result,
but it also suppresses e.g., \bar "|." etc., whereas your solution
/does/ allow these to print.
