Jan was partly right when he said that the bar handling
didn't work correctly, but as we have seen, barNonAuto
does indeed do its job, even though you get some undesired
side-effects.
I found a ugly workaround which works more or less by
accident:
\property Score.defaultBarType = "empty"
The trick is that Lilypond doesn't know about the bar type
"empty" so it can't typeset it, still the bar isn't "", so
it will still give a possible breakpoint.
