FWIW, I develop with the Debian package of 0.87.1, and it works fine
for me.  I think many of the problems may be from people not compiling
newer versions with some configure option like --with-motif20, or
something...

Right, I'm using the Debin slib 2c3-3 package right now.

Right, the GNOME version looks pretty nice now, but it's not yet
usable for anything.
