Hmm. Strictly speaking, I suppose you're right, though I often like
hearing other peoples well-reasoned opinions about things like this as
long as the conversation doesn't stray too far too long. Frankly,
I've learned a huge fraction of what I know about Unix, which servers
are the main ones to consider, how to do all kinds of really clever
things by just watching the side-conversations on the lists I'm on,
and with a threaded mail reader, it's trivial to ignore the bits you
don't like.
Also it's nice to get to know a few (perhaps non-germane) things about
the people you're working with. I find that this can, if you do get
to know the others a little, also make things *more* productive in the
long run. I find people less prone to suspicion, petty squabbles, and
ad-hominem attacks if they actually get to know the other people.
That said, I suppose discussing distributions, no matter how well
intentioned, is a pretty prime target for a flame festival...
