configure is NOT my friend.

Sounds like configure isn't your friend either. When configure says
"configure: warning: Can not find Guile on the system", it's *really*
saying "you don't have the readline development libs installed.
Install libreadlineg2-dev. If I hate you especially badly, you may
need to remove config.cache and re-run me."
