I have used it as a way to track the depreciated value of assets

I interpreted John's request to be that he wanted individual transaction items
to be displayed as if they were moved from the child to the parent.

so we would have:

Utilities:Electricity
1/1/2000 The Electric Company $100.00
2/1/2000 The Electric Company $100.00
Total $200.00

and

Utilities:Gas
1/2/2000 The Gas Company        $10.00
2/2/2000 The Gas Company        $10.00
Total $20.00

shown as

Utilities
1/1/2000 The Electric Company $100.00
1/2/2000 The Gas Company        $10.00
2/1/2000 The Electric Company $100.00
2/2/2000 The Gas Company        $10.00
Total $220.00
