the intent was to someday write a perl script or whatever that would
read teh log file, and use it to reconstruct the data automatically.  As
there has been no pressing need for this (until now), it never got
written.

btw, I am somewhat confused by your listing.  Since you directory
permissions allowed the log file to be written, I wasn't clear why
the corresponding filename.datestring.xac file wasn't also written out.
The latter would have been exactly what you wanted.   So something
bizarre is going on here ...
