the engine counts 'things', it doesn't care if its currency, stocks,
or rabits. These are all 'things'.  The engine also records exchange
rates between different 'things' (it doesn't care what those things are:
you can specify the price of coffee in terms of the number of rabits
needed to buy one pound.)  The only thing it *doesn't* allow is to
accidnetally think that a rabit and coffee are the same thing.
