Glad to hear you got it to behave, but though a minor annoyance, I'd
still call that a bug. However, trying to trigger it again might be
chasing a ghost.
Please do tell though if you see it happen again!

simply save my GnuCash data file and exit the program. Once I exited
and then re-opened the data file, the problem was gone. The Hidden
checkbox was working again for this account the way it was supposed to
work. I still don't know what triggered or caused the problem; but I
