Appreciate that Adrien, I understand the reason to lock down Bugzilla and there
was one response with an account created for me.

It's working again!

And it looks like my problem was related to some kind of font cache issue.
I had a completely different problem that ended up being solved by clearing
~/.cache/fontconfig
mv ~/.cache/fontconfig ~/.cache/fontconfig_bad

Which meant I had a copy of a corrupted fontconfig folder to swap in and out
for some testing.
After removing the folder, something re-populated my ~/.cache/fontconfig
folder. Unclear if it was an update or running a program that relies on it.

start: GnuCash reports are working

mv ~/.cache/fontconfig ~/.cache/fontconfig_good
cp -a ~/.cache/fontconfig_bad ~/.cache/fontconfig

GnuCash reports fail (blank screen, webkitwebprocess eating 100% of cpu core,
html export works)

rm -r ~/.cache/fontconfig
mv ~/.cache/fontconfig_good ~/.cache/fontconfig

GnuCash reports are working again
(without setting WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1, or
WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1)

Don't know what's in there that upsets it - but I've repeated this loop a few
times and it reliably repeats my symptoms, and then restores them.
GnuCash report display also works when my ~/.cache/fontconfig is absent.
There's something in my fontconfig_bad copy that it doesn't like.

webkit bug that seems related: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325185
chromium bug with similar symptoms (webkitwebprocess eats 100% cpu):
https://issues.chromium.org/issues/565475896

The chatbot that pointed me towards those suggested it may have been an update
to package google-chrome-stable - this package is one of four packages that
were BOTH the list of updates that appeared to break it, and also in today's
(updates happened before I noticed it was fixed).
My google-chrome-stable package versions went 154.0.8037.92-1 > 154.0.8037.97-1
> 155.0.8059.39-1
