That may be so but gcj is a build dependency of OpenJDK :)

You can also use jamvm, cacao, ecj (?), icedtea6 (aka OpepJDK) so if
you just need to build the package and don't care about a fully open
bootstrap there's more than one option. For me I'm currently blocked
by missing xorg headers for the awt section, but otherwise it should
got relatively easy.
For those honestly interested FOSDEM is a good time to ping me or
twisti who was maybe the first to do it and documented it..

Hope that helps..

Thanks, my larger point was that the packages may be able to swap out
jvms but many of the build processes are already debugged and defining
paths to gcj. If someone has the time/want to modify all of the packages
that do define this and send the patches upstream then I would entertain
the idea. However, I have seen the greatest gains in the project by
leveraging from what is already done for us upstream by making small
changes/ports which I think in this case would mean getting gcj to work.
Also, if you check out the build dep list in the url I sent, ecj is
there too. There is a nice long list of things needed (and possibly
already satisfied) for the openjdk6 package.
Cheers,
-Tim
