Aptitude lists the following packages as installed in category X11. 
(I'm not including the many more that are marked as automatically 
installed.)

libice6
libsm6
libx11-6
libaux6
sunwxsvc
x-window-system-core
x11-common
xterm

I deliberately installed only the last three of these.  The others must 
have been automatically installed, even though they are not so marked in 
the aptitude display.

Aptitude lists many uninstalled  X11 packages.  Most of them look like 
development libraries or fonts.  Any other suggestions?
