That's the "official version". John Menezes' book, mentioned recently in 
these columns, gives some insight into the less-noticed and unpublicised 
diplomacy underway between New Delhi and Lisbon, especially between the 
1940s and the 1960s. For obvious reasons, this is a little-studied area, 
and in each place the formal version has long held sway. FN
