Many thanks to you all. (Ivan, the resources you have listed here will prove to
be a good start for me. )

There r 2 resource centres in Lisbonne, Portugal, that have many original
documents.

1. Goa house on the cobbled streets near the River Tagus.
2. A small library of the Govt of Portugal further down the street dedicated to
Goa-Portugal relations.

Many of the original documents may have been moved to the University of
Lisbonne, up the road & near the Edward VII monument, which was the intent.

Many of Salazar period documentation is also at the U of Goa.

I have spent time at all 3 locations, almost 3 months in Lisbonne in the
libraries there.
Most documents are in Portuguese, many in English. There has been a translation
project in place.

Relatively crude internet translations are available in Portugal & Europe as
documents become fully available online with a university library card, or
international library card at cost. I can access from Montreal.

Browse Portugal websites, & e-mail libraries for info re. resources available
online. Visiting in person makes a huge difference, tho Portugal has become
expensive.

My interests have moved away from this topic.

There r issues re. Nehru’s intervention, the paratroopers inexplicably dropped
at midnight around the Cathedral of Dom Jesu, & the claim that Salazar wanted
to move SFX’s body to Portugal.
He gave 3 orders to the last Governor of Goa, including that.

A WW1 hero, the Portuguese General refused to do all 3.
He passed away decades later at over 90.
I met him in Lisbonne at a meeting he attended.
Kind gentleman.

When India & Portugal reinstated diplomatic relations, the Goa delegation asked
that the General’s WW1 medals be reinstated, & he be given full honours for how
he handled the last days.
That was done as part of the agreements, & new cultural ties.

I am sure Frederick Noronha is aware of the above, as he is a meticulous
researcher from Saligao, which has given Goa a large share of its
intellectuals. I have been to his house on the main road.

Whenever I visit Goa, a trip to the Saligao Church from Calangute (my grandma
on my mum’s side is from Gauravaddo) is always on my ‘itinerary’.

That's the "official version". John Menezes' book, mentioned recently in these
columns, gives some insight into the less-noticed and unpublicised diplomacy
underway between New Delhi and Lisbon, especially between the 1940s and the
1960s. For obvious reasons, this is a little-studied area, and in each place
the formal version has long held sway. FN

Dear all,
In my research, I find myself stumbling along trying to collect any interesting
and potentially relevant facts. Earlier today I came across this site which
seemed to be quite informative but lacked any sources. I apologize if anyone
has posted this before, but would any of you be able to 1) verify the accuracy
of this brief or point me to credible sources 2) suggest a repository of all
things related to the history of Goa?

Here is the location online of the brief
