dThanks Fred for the insight. I am largely interested in how many
"outsiders", loosely defined as those who are non-Goans and precisely from
other states of India, are there, a rough estimate will do, in Goa. I saw
slums in the Dabolim neighbourhood, and I was informed that Margao hills
too have such slums, mostly of poor migrants.
In the context of Goa's integration with India after 1961, the figure of
migrants may have risen sharply. Goa has been a magnet, as I understand.
So, o from the day India took over to now, or rather even midway after thee
takeover, a rough figure should be available, if at all the government
keeps such a record.
It could be one way to show that Goa has lost its "original" nature, and
largely intergrated into the social environment. Gosnd migrated to Bombay
and Karachi in search of employment and now many have found routes to
foreign countries. So, in a way, the space is filled by outsiders or
"balle", used by many Goans in a derogatory tone.
In the overall viewpoint of the Liberation/Annexation debate, it would be
useful to come to some conclusion in the social makeup of Goa after 1961.
